Established in 1966, Dacia’s first cars were produced under Renault 8 license.
Later, Dacia opted to terminate its contract with Renault designing and manufacturing its own model. During the communist era Dacia models sold mostly on the internal market while efforts to export the car met with mixed results.
In 1999 Renault acquired Dacia and significantly upgraded the manufacturing facilities. An inspired move that led to an unqualified success and huge boost for the Renault Group itself. Numbers speak for themselves: In 2013 alone sales reached 429,540 vehicles, a 19.3% raise as compared to 2012; all the more impressive given the -1.7% drop in demand in Europe and -3% in Eurasia region.
